The uterus is a hollow muscular organ in which a baby can grow and develop. Each month, the uterus grows a nutrient-rich lining in preparation for pregnancy. If there is no pregnancy then the uterus sheds its lining. This is called a menstrual period. If a there is a pregnancy, the uterus expands as the baby grows and, after the baby is born, returns to its normal size.
