The vaginal ring is a soft plastic ring about 5cm in diameter. It contains two hormones, oestrogen and progestogen. The ring is self-inserted into the vagina and left in place for three weeks. It is then taken out for one week and there is a monthly bleed (like a period). After this fourth week, a new ring is inserted and the cycle is repeated.
